THE BAVARIAN HARTSCHIERES WERE ONE OF THE OLDEST SURVIVING “PALACE GUARDS” IN EUROPE WHEN THEY DISAPPEARED WITH THE FALL OF THE WITTELSBACH MONARCHY IN 1918. THEIR EARLIEST KNOWN EXISTANCE IS RECORDED AS FAR BACK AS 1320 WHEN THEY WERE FORMED AS THE TRABANT GUARD. THE TRABANT GUARD SURVIVED UNTIL 1807 WHEN 37 TRABANTS WERE RE-MUSTERED INTO THE HARTSCHIERE.
THE 18TH CENTURY STYLE UNIFORM WAS CHANGED IN 1852 TO A MORE HANDSOME FORM WHICH EXISTED UNTIL 1918. THE TUNIC WAS BAVARIAN BLUE, LACED WITH SILVER, AND ON EACH SHOULDER WAS A CURIOUS HALF-MOON PAD, STRIPED BLUE AND SILVER. THE WHITE SUPRA VEST WAS WORN OVER THEIR TUNIC ,THE EMBROIDERED CREST ON THE VEST FEATURED A LARGE VERSION OF THE ORDER OF ST. HUBERTUS WITH ITS LATIN MOTTO “IN TRAU VAST” (WHICH MEANS: BE FIRM IN FIDELITY) THE HARTSCHIERS WERE ARMED WITH EPPES AND A STRAIGHT BLADED GOLD ETCHED HALBERD.
ENTRANCE INTO THE GUARD WAS A GREAT HONOR AND ONLY LONG SERVING SOLDIERS OF IMPECCABLE CHARACTER AND CONDUCT WERE ADMITTED, WHILE OFFICERS WERE NOMINATED BY THE BAVARIAN KING HIMSELF.
FROM THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY ON, THE HARTSCHIERES WERE USED ON CEREMONIAL HONOR DUTIES AND FOR GUARDING THE ROYAL FAMILY AT THE MUNICH RESIDENZ AND AT PALAIS NYMPHENBERG.
IN EARLY CENTURIES THE GUARD ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED THE DUKES OR ELECTORS OF BAVARIA ON CAMPAIGN. THE UNIT TOOK PART IN THE HEAVY FIGHTING AT THE CLIMAX OF THE SIEGE OF VIENNA IN 1683, AND HELP FIGHT BACK THE TURKS. IT FOUGHT WITH THE BRITISH ARMY IN 1693 AT THE BATTLE OF NEERWINDEN AND LATER AT THE SEIGE OF NAMUR , WHEN ELECTOR MAXIMILIAN III EMMANUEL WAS AN ALLY OF WILLIAM III OF ENGLAND. LATER, IT FOUGHT WITH THE FRENCH AGAINST MARLBOROUGH’S ARMY AT BLENHEIM.
THE END CAME FOR THE HARTACHIERE IN 1918, WHEN THE KING OF BAVARIA ABDICATED, AND THE HARTSCHIERE GUARD IN THE RESIDENZ PALACE GUARD ROOM GAVE UP THEIR ARMS TO AVOID USELESS BLOODSHED AND DISAPPEARED IN THE RUBBLE OF A DYING KINGDOM.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE BAVARIAN HARTSCHIERE HELMET IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
