GEORGE I (GEORGE LEWIS OR GEORG LUDWIG) WAS BORN MAY 28, 1660 AT OSNABRUCK, HANNOVER. ALSO IT HAPPENED, IN MAY OF 1660, CHARLES II WAS RESTORED TO THE ENGLISH THRONE. THERE WAS NO APPARENT LINK BETWEEN THE TWO EVENTS AND NO ONE APPEARS TO HAVE PROPHESIED, THAT FIFTY-FOUR YEARS LATER THAT THE CHILD BORN GEORGE LEWIS WOULD BECOME KING OF ENGLAND.
THE MOTHER OF GEORGE WAS SOPHIA, DAUGHTER OF THE "WINTER QUEEN", ELIZABETH OF BOHEMIA, WHO WAS IN HER TURN THE DAUGHTER OF KING JAMES I OF ENGLAND. IT WAS THUS THROUGH SOPHIA THAT THE CLAIM TO THE ENGLISH THRONE FOR GEORGE LAY.
ON NOVEMBER 21, 1682, GEORGE MARRIED HIS FIRST COUSIN, SOPHIA DOROTHEA OF CELLE, DAUGHTER OF GEORGE WILLIAM, DUKE OF BRUNWICK-LUNEBERG. GEORGE AND SOPHIA HAD TWO CHILDREN, A SON GEORGE AUGUSTUS (LATER GEORGE II KING OF BRITAIN 1727-1760) AND A DAUGHTER SOPHIA DOROTHEA, SHE WOULD MARRY FREDERICK WILLIAM OF PRUSSIA (LATER FREDERICK WILLIAM I, KING OF PRUSSIA 1688-1740) THEIR SON CHARLES BORN IN 1712 ,WOULD LATER BECOME FREDERICK II "THE GREAT" KING OF PRUSSIA. THUS GEORGE I WAS THE GRANDFATHER OF "FREDERICK THE GREAT"
IN 1693, GEORGE AND HIS BROTHER, FREDERICK AUGUSTUS, SERVED IN THE GREAT TURKISH WARS AT THE BATTLE OF VIENNA.
IN 1698, GEORGE INHERITED THE TITLE AND LANDS OF BRUNSWICK-LUNEBERG AS ELECTOR. A SUCCESSION OF EUROPEAN WARS EXPANDED HIS GERMAN DOMAINS DURING HIS LIFETIME, AND IN 1708 HE WAS RATIFIED AS PRINCE-ELECTOR OF HANNOVER. IN 1701 HE WAS MADE A KNIGHT OF THE GARTER AND IN 1705 WAS MADE A NATURALIZED BRITISH SUBJECT.
ON AUGUST 1, 1714, GEORGE SUCCEDED HIS THIRD COUSIN QUEEN ANNE OF GREAT BRITAIN AS KING OF GREAT BRITAIN. ALTHOUGH OVER 50 CATHOLICS BORE CLOSER BLOOD RELATIONSHIPS TO ANNE, THE ACT OF SETTLEMENT 1701 PROHIBITED CATHOLICS FROM INHERITING THE BRITISH THRONE AND GEORGE WAS ANNE'S CLOSEST LIVING PROTESTANT RELATIVE.
DURING GEORGE'S REIGN, THE POWERS OF THE MONARCHY DIMINISHED AND BRITAIN BEGAN A TRANSITION TO THE MODERN SYSTEM OF CABINET GOVERNMENT LED BY A PRIME MINISTER.
WHEN GEORGE I DIED ON A TRIP TO HIS NATIVE HANNOVER IN 1727, BRITAIN HAD A STRONG AND STABLE GOVERNMENT. HE IS BURIED AT HERRENHAUSEN, HANNOVER. THE BUST IS BASED ON THE PAINTING FROM THE STUDIO OF SIR GODFREY KELLER CIRCA 1714. GEORGE I, WEARS THE ORDER OF THE GARTER MANTLE, AND THE ORDER OF THE GARTER COLLAR AND BADGE, (THE GREAT GEORGE, PATRON SAINT OF ENGLAND).
