GEORGE V (GEORGE FREDERICK ALEXANDER CHARLES ERNEST AUGUSTUS), PRINCE GEORGE OF CUMBERLAND, WAS BORN MAY 27, 1819 IN BERLIN GERMANY. HE WAS THE ONLY SON OF PRINCE ERNEST AUGUST, DUKE OF CUMBERLAND AND LATER KING ERNEST AUGUST II OF HANNOVER.
GEORGE, THE GRANDSON OF ENGLANDíS KING GEORGE III, LIVED HIS YOUTH IN ENGLAND AND IN BERLIN. HE LOST THE SIGHT IN ONE EYE DURING A CHILDHOOD ILLNESS AND LOST SIGHT IN THE OTHER EYE IN AN ACCIDENT AT AGE 14 IN 1833. THUS GEORGE WAS TOTALLY BLIND AND THIS LEFT SOME DOUBTS WHETHER HE WAS QUALIFIED TO SUCCEED TO THE GOVERNMENT OF HANNOVER, BUT HIS FATHER DECIDED THAT HE SHOULD DO SO.
IN 1835, HIS UNCLE, KING WILLIAM IV OF ENGLAND, CREATED HIM A KNIGHT OF THE GARTER. IN 1837, WILLIAM IV DIED AND HIS NIECE VICTORIA ASCENDED TO THE BRITISH THRONE. BECAUSE OF SALIC LAW, THE CROWN OF HANNOVER PASSED TO HIS FATHER ERNEST AUGUST, THE DUKE OF CUMBERLAND. THUS IN 1837, GEORGE BECAME THE CROWN PRINCE OF HANNOVER. HE WAS SECOND IN LINE TO THE BRITISH THONE UNTIL HIS FIRST COUSIN QUEEN VICTORIA HAD HER FIRST CHILD IN 1840.
ON FEBRUARY 18, 1843, AT HANNOVER, GEORGE MARRIED PRINCESS MARIE OF SAXE-ALTENBURG, THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH, DUKE OF SAXE-ALTENBURG. AS A WEDDING GIFT, PRINCESS MARIE'S BROTHER ERNEST, THE FUTURE GRAND DUKE OF SAXE-ALTENBURG, GAVE HER A PAIR OF MAGNIFICENT MEISSEN PORCELAIN VASES WITH PAINTED VIEWS OF HER FORMER HOME THE SCHLOSS OF SAXE-ALTENBURG. (THESE VASES ARE NOW ON DISPLAY IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM)
IN 1845, THE KING AND QUEEN HAD THEIR FIRST CHILD, PRINCE ERNEST AUGUST III. THEY WOULD HAVE TWO MORE CHILDREN, PRINCESS FREDERICA AND PRINCESS MARIE. ON THE DEATH OF KING ERNEST AUGUST II ON NOVEMBER 18, 1851, CROWN PRINCE GEORGE SUCCEEDED HIS FATHER AS KING OF HANNOVER, DUKE OF BRUNSWICK-LUNEBURG, DUKE OF CUMBERLAND AND TEVIOTDALE, AND EARL OF ARMAGH, ASSUMING THE STYLE OF GEORGE V.
IN THE SUMMER OF 1857, KING GEORGE STARTED CONSTRUCTION OF MARIENBURG SCHLOSS. THE CASTLE WOULD TAKE SEVEN YEARS TO COMPLETE AND WAS A WEDDING GIFT TO QUEEN MARIE ON HER 39TH BIRTHDAY. MARIENBURG SCHLOSS WOULD BECOME THE SUMMER HOME OF THE KING AND QUEEN.
IN 1866, KAISER WILHELM I OF PRUSSIA INITIATED THE AUSTRO-PRUSSIAN WAR, TO CONQUER AND UNITE A MAJORITY OF THE GERMAN KINGDOMS. SAXONY, KASSEL AND HANNOVER SIDED WITH AUSTRIA. ON JUNE 16, 1866, PRUSSIAN FORCES BEGAN MOVING AGAINST ALL THREE GERMAN KINGDOMS. THE HANNOVERIAN ARMY FOUGHT THE PRUSSIANS AT BAD LANGENSALZA. THE HANNOVERIANS WON THE BATTLE BUT THEIR ARMY WAS SO DESIMATED THEY COULD NOT FIGHT ON ANY LONGER AND HAD TO SURRENDER TO RE-ENFORCED PRUSSIANS. THIS MARKED THE DEMISE OF THE HANNOVERIAN ARMY AND THE ANNEXATION OF HANNOVER INTO THE BURGEONING KINGDOM OF PRUSSIA.
GEORGE V AND HIS ROYAL FAMILY WENT INTO EXILE AT GMUNDEN, AUSTRIA. HOWEVER, THE DEPOSED KING NEVER RENOUNCED HIS RIGHTS TO THE THRONE OF HANNOVER NOR ACKNOWLEDGED PRUSSIAíS ACTION. THUS HE WAS KING OF HANNOVER UNTIL HIS DEATH.
GEORGE V DIED JUNE 12, 1878 IN PARIS WHILE SEEKING MEDICAL ATTENTION. HE IS BURIED AT ST. GEORGE'S CHAPEL, WINDSOR CASTLE. HIS WIFE, QUEEN MARIE, LIVED AT MARIENBURG SCHLOSS ONLY TWO YEARS OF HER LIFE AND THEN WENT WHEN INTO EXILE WITH HER HUSBAND. SHE DIED IN JANUARY 9, 1907 AT GMUNDEN, AUSTRIA.
THE BUST DEPICTS, GEORGE V WEARING HIS HANNOVER GENERALíS UNIFORM OF THE 1850íS. THE HANNOVER GENERAL'S PICKELBAUBE HAS THE ORIGIONAL WHITE OVER YELLOW FEATHER PLUME AND DEPICTS, ST. GEORGE THE DRAGON ON THE PORCELAIN HELMET PLATE. THE GUELPHIC ORDER OF HANNOVER COLLAR AND BADGE IS WORN ON THE UNIFORM. THE CHAIN DATES BEFORE 1821, AND THE BADGE IS DATED 1815, THE YEAR THE ROYAL GUELPHIC ORDER WAS FOUNDED BYTHE PRINCE REGENT (LATER GEORGE IV OF BRITIAN). THE GUELPHIC BREAST STAR DATES FROM 1860.
THE UNIFORM, HELMET AND YELLOW-SILVER HANNOVERIAN SASH COMES FROM THE HANNOVER MARIENBURG AUCTION, SOTHEBY'S 2005. THE COMPLETE UNIFORM INCLUDING HIS SWORD AND GENERAL'S BICORNE IS ON DISPLAY IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM. AN OIL PAINTING OF CROWN PRINCE GEORGE, (BY RICHARD LAUCHERT, SIGN AND DATED 1847) IN A CAPTAINS UNIFORM IS ON DISPLAY IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
