HESSEN-DARMSTADT WAS A GRAND-DUCHY IN GERMANY, THE HISTORY OF WHICH BEGINS WITH THE PARTITION OF THE HESSEN LANDS OF PHILLIP I IN 1567. WHEN THE HESSE LAND WERE PARTITIONED AMONG THE FOUR SONS OF PHILLIP I, THE YOUNGEST SON, GEORGE, RECEIVED THE UPPER COUNTY OF KATZENELNBOGEN AND SELECTED DARMSTADT AS HIS NEW RESIDENCE. HE BECAME FOUNDER OF THE HESSE-DARMSTADT LINE AND WAS STYLED GEORGE I (1547-1597). ADDITIONAL LANDS WERE ADDED TO THE GRAND-DUCHY BY GEORGE I AND HIS SON AND SUCCESSOR LOUIS V (1577-1626). IN 1621, DURING THE 30 YEARS WAR, THE ROOTS OF THE HESSEN-DARMSTADT LEIB-GARDE REGIMENT WAS FORMED TO PROTECT THE LANDGRAVE LOUIS V.
THE REGIMENT CHANGED NAMES SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS UNTIL 1768 WHEN IT WAS FORMED AS THE LIEB-GARDE REGIMENT BY LUDWIG IX. IN THAT YEAR THE REGIMENT WAS OUTFITTED WITH NEW UNIFORMS AND MITER CAPS THAT WERE STYLED AFTER THE PRUSSIAN ARMY, AS LUDWIG IX WAS A PERSONAL FRIEND AND ADMIRER OF PRUSSIAN KING FREDERIC THE GREAT. THE MITER CAP HAD A PRUSSIAN STAR OF THE ORDER OF THE BLACK EAGLE AND THE PRUSSIAN MOTTO "PRO GLORIA ET PATRIA" APPEARS ON THE MITER CAP.
HESSEN-DARMSTADT SOLDIERS CAME TO AMERICA WITH A REGIMENT OF HESSEN SOLDIERS, WHO FOUGHT ON THE SIDE OF THE BRITISH AGAINST THE UNITED COLONIES, DURING THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDANCE.
TWO OF THE HESSEN-DARMSTADT SOLDIERS, WERE IMPRISONED AT MOUNT PENN, AT READING, PENNSYLVANIA. AFTER THEIR RELEASE AT THE END OF THE WAR, THE TWO SOLDIERS, JOHANNES KOCH AND DANIEL TEXTER, DECIDED TO REMAIN IN AMERICA AND START A NEW LIFE. DURING THAT PERIOD, THIS UNIFORM AND MITER CAP WAS WORN BY SOME OF THE HESSEN TROOPS.
THE HESSEN-DARMSTADT LEIB-GARDE REGIMENT SURVIVED UNTIL WORLD WAR II AS THE OLDEST MILITARY UNIT IN THE GERMAN ARMY. THE GROSS HERZOGLICHE FREIHEER LEIBGARDE 115TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, AS THEY WERE KNOWN, MADE THEIR HOME IN DARMSTADT. THIS REGIMENT, AS WELL AS OTHER UNITS OF THE GERMAN 33RD INFANTRY DIVISION BECAME THE BACKBONE OF THE AFRIKA CORPS IN 1940 WHEN THE DIVISION PROVIDED THE PRIMARY UNITS FOR THE 15TH PANZER DIVISION.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE HESSEN-DARNSTADT MITER CAP 1768, IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
