1763 WAS A SIGNIFICANT YEAR IN AUSTRIA'S HISTORY. THE TREATY OF HUBERTUSBURG WAS SIGNED ON FEBRUARY 10, 1763 BY AUSTRIA, PRUSSIA AND SAXONY. TOGETHER WITH THE TREATY OF PARIS, IT MARKED THE END OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR AND THE SEVEN YEAR'S WAR, GIVING AUSTRIA AT LAST, PEACE WITH FREDERICK THE GREAT AND HIS KINGDOM OF PRUSSIA.
IT WAS IN THAT YEAR, AUSTRIAN EMPERESS MARIA TRERESA, FOUNDED THE ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE. THE GUARD WAS ORIGINALLY COMPRISED OF 30  OFFICERS  OF THE ROMAN ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE HORSE CAVLARY AND 50 OFFICERS FROM THE IMPERIAL NOBLE ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE CAVALRY. IN 1765, AFTER THE DEATH OF EMPEROR FRANZ STEPHEN, THE ROMAN AND IMPERIAL ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE REGIMENTS WERE COMBINED TO FORM ONE ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE AND THE REGIMENT WAS RELOCATED TO THE LOWER BELVEDERE PALACE.
ONLY OFFICERS OF NOBLE BIRTH WERE CONSIDERED FOR THE GUARD. THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS TO THE GUARD WERE VERY STRICT. OFFICER CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS INCLUDED, A MINIMUM HEIGHT OF 5'9", THE ASPIRANT CANDIDATE HAD TO BE HANDSOME. TO HAVE WON VALOUR IN BATTLE BEFORE THE ENEMY AND TO HAVE HAD RECEIVED INJURIES IN BATTLE WAS A HIGH PRIORITY. HOWEVER, THE INJURIES COULD NOT HAVE DEFACED THE OFFICERS GOOD LOOKS. EXCELLENT SERVICE RECORDS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE HORSE RIDING SKILLS WERE A MUST. UNMARRIED OFFICERS WERE PREFERRED AS THE ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE OFFICERS WOULD HAVE TO DIE PROCTECING THEIR MONARCH IF NECESSARY. UNTIL 1780, ONLY CATHOLIC OFFICER'S  WERE CONSIDERED. IN 1807, (DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS), NOBLE BIRTH WAS NO LONGER A REQUIREMENT AND ADMISSION TO THE REGIMENT WAS OPENED TO ALL OFFICERS WHO MET THE STANDARD'S.
THE GUARD'S MAIN FUNCTION WAS SAFETY AND PROTECTION OF THE IMPERIAL FAMILY AND TO MAINTAIN ORDER AT THE IMPERIAL COURT OF VIENNA. THE GUARD ACHIEVED THEIR GREATEST SPLENDOR DURING EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH'S REIGN (1848-1916 ).
DRESSED IN THIER MAGNIFICENT “PONCEAU RED” AND GOLD-EMBROIDERED TUNIC AND GERMAN SILVERED, GOLD GILDED, DOUBLE-HEADED EAGLE HELMET WITH THE WHITE BUFFALO HAIR PARADE PLUME, THE REGIMENT ON HORSE BACK WAS A WELCOME AND BEAUTIFUL SITE AT THE COURT OF VIENNA.
THE ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE DISBANDED ON NOVEMBER 22, 1918 AT THE END OF WORLD WAR I.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE AUSTRIAN ARCIEREN-LEIBGARDE UNIFORM IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
