BASED ON THE PAINTING IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM BY ANDRE JEAN ANTOINE DESPOIS, SIGNED AND DATED 1809. DESPOIS WAS BORN JULY 24, 1783 IN VANNE FOISSY, BURGUNDY, FRANCE. HE WAS THE SON OF A GARDENER TO THE MARQUIS DE BERULLE. IN 1807, THE MARQUIS ASKED THAT THE TALENTED DESPOIS BE TRAINED AT THE SCHOOL OF THE PRESTIGIOUS JEAN-LOUIS DAVID AND THE EQUALLY FAMOUS ANTOINE JEAN GROS ( BOTH WERE PAINTERS OF NAPOLEON).
THE 7’X 5’ OIL ON CANVAS WAS PAINTED IN 1809, TWO YEARS AFTER DESPOIS ENTERED THE SCHOOL AND AT A TIME WHEN CORONATION PAINTINGS OF NAPOLEON WERE IN GREAT DEMAND. THE PAINTING WAS SOLD IN 2002 AT CHRISTIES, LONDON AND PURCHASED BY THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
NAPOLEON’S CORONATION TOOK PLACE ON DECEMBER 2, 1804. MASSIVE CROWDS LINED THE STREETS OF PARIS AS THE IMPERIAL CARRIAGE PASSED THROUGH THE CITY, ESCORTED BY MOUNTED HORSEMEN. ARRIVING AT NOTRE DAME, NAPOLEON AND JOSEPHINE ENTERED THE CATHEDRAL AND DRESSED IN THEIR SPLENDED CORONATION ROBES.
THE CORONATION DRESS OF NAPOLEON WAS WHITE SILK EXTRAVAGANTLY EMBROIDERED IN GOLD. NAPOLEON’S GOLDEN CROWN OF LAUREL LEAVES COST 8,000 FRANCS. HIS CORONATION ROBE WAS RED VELVET EMBROIDERED WITH A POWDERING OF THE IMPERIAL BEES IN GOLD AND THE CAPITAL LETTER “N”, SURROUNDED BY A WREATH OF INTERLACED BRANCHES OF OLIVE,LAUREL,AND OAK.
THE VELVET AND EMBROIDERY WORK COST 15,000 FRANCS. HIS ROBE WAS LINED WITH 15,000 FRANCS WORTH OF ERMINE. THE MAGNIFICENT REGENT DIAMOND WAS SET INTO THE HANDLE OF NAPOLEON’S CORONATION SWORD.
