THE SAXON CAVALRY COMPRISED TWO HEAVY REGIMENTS. THE PREMIER HEAVY UNIT WAS THE ROYAL SAXON GARDE REITER 1 SCHWERES REGIMENT, FIRST RAISED IN 1680  AND GARRISONED AT DRESDEN, GERMANY.
IN 1907 THE REGIMENT ADOPTED THE BEAUTIFUL AND IMPOSING GERMAN SILVER CROUCHING LION HELMET FOR  GALA AND PARADE OCCASIONS. THE HELMET WAS WORN UP TO WORLD WAR I, AND ONLY A VERY FEW OF THEM WERE MADE.
THE HELMET WAS THE SAME SHAPE AS THE PRUSSIAN CUIRASSIER HELMET, THE SKULL AND PEEKS IN TOMBACK. IT HAD GERMAN SILVER MOUNTINGS AND A SAXON SILVERD ARMORIAL STAR HELMET PLATE,  WITH GILDED CENTRAL ARMS AND WEATH. THE COCKADES WERE REICHOKARDE AND STATE SAXON GREEN AND WHITE.
THE OFFICERS KOLLAR (FULL DRESS TUINC) WAS CORNFLOWER BLUE, THE COLLAR AND FACINGS OF SLIVER  AND WHITE WITH CORNFLOWER BLUE PIPING. THE PIPING AROUND THE ARMHOLES AND DOWN THE BACK SEAMS AND THE ARM SEAMS WAS WHITE. THE REGIMENT OFFICERS WORE GILDED EPAULETTES ON A CORNFLOWER BLUE UNDERLAY WITH SILVER RANK STARS.
THE OFFICERS POUCH BELT WAS CORNFLOWER BLUE FACED WITH GOLD LACE WITH A SILVER ORNAMENTAL SAXON ROYAL ARMS SHIELD. THE OFFICERS POUCH WAS GOLD, FACED WITH SILVER LACE ON PALE BLUE VELVET. IN THE CENTER OF THE LID WAS A GERMAN SILVERED SAXON SHIELD.
THE BUST IS BASED ON THE SAXON GARDE RIETER UNIFORM AND HELMET IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.
